Jon W's View on The Barry Transfer Saga:

The Red’s Given a Barry-go-round?
Look, I don’t know about other Reds but me…I don’t think I rate Gareth Barry as much as Rafa seems to. Now I’m not saying that Rafa’s out of his mind to suggest the American w4nk3rs fork out £18mil for him, it’s just that I don’t think he’s worth that much. I’m not English but I’m all for seeing more local players being given a chance to shine on the pitch. However, the caveat is English players plying their trade in the UK cost a bomb. Who’d blame Rafa, the fergies, the russians and the whingers for bringing in foreign talent that cost a tenth that has more heart to play than the local lads?

Bottom line is Barry, in my mind should only cost about £8mil tops.

Then there’s the whole transfer issue with Rafa and O’Neill trading barbs and Barry adding fuel to fire by lambasting his manager all over the press. Bloody embarrassing. Bert suggested that the whole thing could have been avoided if Barry would just throw in his transfer request. It would have saved everyone a lot of headache. I didn’t think so at first. I just thought that Barry didn’t do so just because he needed the insurance that if our ‘proud’ owners refused to sanction the purchase, he’d still be a Villan. Now, I am not so sure. Why?

The sod is now cup-tied! He played in Villa’s UEFA Cup qualifier. The interview with O'Neill yielded this answer:

O'Neill added after the match that it had been Barry's decision to play.

"I had a talk with him beforehand. He was in the right frame of mind and wanted to play and there was nothing that would have stopped him which was very pleasing," he said.

"He wanted to play and he knew the consequences so the decision was very much his."

I thought he wanted Champions League football? If he was still hopeful and wanted to come to us badly, he would have begged not to be played. And hand in his transfer request too. Shows me one thing; he doesn’t have the heart and passion Rafa looks for. He can stay with the Villans as long as he wants to.

We’ve certainly been given the Barry-go-round. In a chat I had with Bert this morning, I created a new word to describe him. I can’t reproduce the individual words here since the content should be family friendly. The new term is ‘Fwankwitard’. It’s a combination of 3 very ‘poetic’ words. Can you make out what they are? A mug of bevy or Coke on me this Saturday if you can guess.

i do concur that the price is overvalued. i too do agree with the 'attitude' which is so not red stuffs. i however do see we are so lacking in midfield-forward connection tho we do have gerrard filling the gap.

i do understand rafa's mind trying to get david villa or barry ... geezzz, all the sudden this villa word ... rings ...

i think the idea is to move gerrard back as a winger (a strategy used 2 and 3 seasons ago which was very effective) and someone effective have to take gerrard's role at midfield.

these days, liverpool is so readable and the strategy is so dependent on who will be playing:

finnan.arbeloa = overlapping rightback
dossena.aurileo = overlapping leftback
carragher.skrtel = centrehalf
agger = long pasing fullback
macherrano.alonso = halfback
gerrard = midfield
pennat.kuyt = right wing
babel = left wing
keane.torres = forward

we seems having lack of flexibility here.

with david villa or barry coming in, i believe they can add more choices in strategy.

back to this barry thing again, yes, i think he is overvalued and i think it is better to wait and see for christmas spree.

Senor Rafa once said, the right fit for the table is important and he has short-listed Gareth Barry as the right fit for the left side of our team.

So GBP18m is the price to pay .... just pay it and we'll be marching towards No. 19 and No. 6 this season!

WTF are G & H waiting for? Christmas? Geez ... they should really have stuck to ice hockey which they both understand ....

FFS, just leave the football decisions to Rafa!

Cmon mate, 8mil is ridiculous! Only the crap English players are sold at that price. Seeing how good Barry has been in the UEFA tie against Harfhowdyaspellit and in the Prem against Man City has vindicated how good he is. The real blame has to be put on the owners, as Shanks once said the holy trinity only consists of the players, fans and gaffa. The management is just to sign the cheques. If this goes on long enough I think Rafa will crack up and resign or get the sack.

The other thing that bothers is rafa's total ignorance in buying a QUALITY winger. We are on the verge of being 'wing-less' this season (I see Benayoun as more of a hole player) if Pennant's sold.

Btw, nice blog. Just discovered it. Hope there's a fan forum in construction as well.

Hi User. Would be nice to have a name to call you, mate. Thanks for stopping by.

As much as adding a quality out-an-out winger will help in our quest, I am increasingly convinced that Rafa will not go down that route. Either because he cannot buy the one he wants or he's just employing a different approach.

This is probably well illustrated by the fact that he bought 2 wing backs in Dossena and Deggen.

There will be more of MyRAWK, mate. If you visit www.my-rawk.com there will be more things added. Keep coming back and let us know how we can keep in touch with you.

I like Barry, but I'm fed up of this whole bloody circus.

Had Barry been really interested, he could have put in his transfer request and knocked off 3 million off the fee. Even then it'd be too much at 15 million but this season's transfer market is crazy.

However, the fact that we have such poor width is terrifying and bodes very badly for us.

We should have put in the money fo Bentley,Silva or even Quaresma (which is the latest rumor doing the rounds)
